FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Melbourne, Victoria, 18 September 2023 – Today, ahead of World River’s Day (24 September), the Yarra Riverkeeper Association releases its assessment of the first year of implementation of Burndap Birrarung burndap umarkoo – the plan to reimagine the future of the Yarra, Birrarung River as a living entity.

Yarra Riverkeeper, Charlotte Sterrett: “The Yarra, Birrarung River is a vital part of our community, and this Plan represents our collective commitment to its revitalisation. In this first year, we have witnessed the foundational work being done, but critical aspects require immediate attention.”

“To bring this vision to life, adequate funding is essential to ensure that we can fully realise the potential of the Yarra Strategic Plan.”

“Crucially, integrating the Land Use Framework and applying the principle of net environmental gain is foundational in ensuring any future development along the Birrarung benefits rather than harms this precious living entity.”

“Community involvement, transparency, and engagement must be elevated. So far, this has been lacking.”

The Yarra Riverkeeper Association eagerly anticipates the progress and transformation that the Yarra Strategic Plan promises. It calls upon the government and decision-makers to include the organisation and local communities in the journey to realise this vision – together.

Yarra Riverkeeper, Charlotte Sterrett: “We are ready to work collaboratively with all stakeholders to ensure the success of the Yarra Strategic Plan. Together, we can breathe new life into the Yarra, Birrarung River for the benefit of present and future generations.”
