A storytelling and community engagement project.

Love Stories of the Birrarung will inspire Victorians to love their river. For what we love, we take care of. YRKA is partnering with writers Carolyn Tate and Christine McFetridge to feature the deeply human stories of both the well-known, and the little-known, champions for the river.

Carolyn Tate is a river swimmer, author and educator who lives on unceded Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Country. She is the creator of Love Stories of the Birrarung and the author of The Purpose Project and Brave Women Write. Christine McFetridge is a settler New Zealander based on unceded Wadawurrung Country. Her practice-led PhD project attempts to unlearn settler colonial representations of the Birrarung.

Along the 242km length of the river from the source to the sea, Carolyn and Christine will be meeting interviewees at their special spot by the river to gather their story, hear how they’re caring for her, and their dreams for the future.
