How to reverse an ecological disaster

, By Yarra

The restoration of the Kissimmee River in Florida, USA is an amazing success story that shows how we can reverse the damage we’ve caused to the environment. Unfortunately, the river was turned into a deep channel after flooding and hurricanes in the 1940s, which led to a 90% decline in species populations.

But in the late 1990s, the government finally realised its mistake and invested over $1 billion to restore the river! This project was a collaborative effort between the federal and state governments and other organisations, and it has been a great success. It not only benefits wildlife, but also helps with flood mitigation and water management.

This is a great example of how we can make a positive impact on the environment when we work together at a large scale. You can read more about it on the National Geographic website. It’s free and takes just 30 seconds to sign up.
