The main focus of research on plastic pollution has been the marine environment. There is a relative lack of knowledge on plastic waste occurrence in rivers and along riverbanks.

Join the Yarra Riverkeeper Association, Cleanwater Group and the RMIT Litter Tracker Team to gain insight into the presence, source, and fate of plastics in the Yarra River. In this seminar we’ll share the findings of three years of Yarra litter research and will discuss the implications of plastic for this freshwater ecosystem. Dr Kavitha Chinathamby will then zoom in on the fate of plastic bottles in the Yarra River. We’ll follow the journey of bottles containing GPS trackers released in various creeks and rivers and improve our understanding of how litter moves from our suburbs to our beaches, bays and the ocean.

We acknowledge the Victorian Government Port Phillip Bay fund for supporting this project.
