We tell the river’s “story”, highlighting its wonders and its challenges. We monitor its health and activities affecting it. We run educational events, river tours and give informative presentations to schools, community groups, the authorities and businesses. We work closely with numerous government bodies and NGOs and advocate directly and through the news media for river care.
We regularly deliver speeches and presentations to school classes, tertiary education groups, community groups, service clubs, business associations, and at seminars, workshops and conferences. They are delivered either beside the river or in venues where we can show colourful images of the river. The goal is to inform and engage audiences about the wonders of the Yarra River and related topics such as the river’s history, its wonderful wildlife, up-to-date commentary on urban water issues, and how people can help.
Having delivered over 800 talks to audiences totalling over 30,000 people, we have earned the reputation for giving engaging and thought-provoking presentations.
We also host quarterly seminars on different river related subjects such as plastic waste and the circular economy.
Litter, plastics, and microplastics are contaminating the Yarra’s waters, making the Yarra one of the largest contributors of litter into Port Phillip Bay.
We work closely with the state government and community to raise awareness and get critical support for the Yarra. We help give a voice to the river and community that relies upon the Yarra.
Through presentations, our Yarra Catchment Atlas, Toolkits and reports, we educate others so they too can appreciate and understand the Yarra.
Together we can add to our understanding of the river and build a better picture of the pressures it faces, its social significance and discover solutions for restoring the health of the Yarra.
For the next few years, we will be regenerating your Yarra, enhancing the work that has been done and equipping the groups along the catchment.
We all play a part in protecting the Yarra River. You can help secure its future and make a real difference through the Yarra Riverkeeper Association.
Welcome to Yarra Talks! A podcast created and run by Yarra Riverkeeper volunteers as a way of bringing you closer to your Yarra.
